The Big Six of Media Conglomerates
In 1983, 90% of the mass media was owned by 50 major companies, but by the end of the year 2000 those 50 companies are down to only six companies that owned 90% of the mass media. Between those years of 1983 and 2000 there was a media consolidation, which is the process of fewer organizations or companies gaining control of more of the mass media, which in then turned these six companies into media conglomerates. Which are companies that own large numbers of smaller companies in various mass media like television, radio, publishing, movies, and the internet. The big six companies are Disney, Comcast, News Corporation, Time Warner, Viacom, and CBS. We are all affected by these companies because we are all exposed to the media through advertisements, newspapers, and television. In 2003, Viacom News Corp and GE requested to eliminate all media ownership rules which allowed them to own more media corporations across the board. Before companies were only allowed to own 7 stations and nothing else to now being able to own both printing like newspapers and owning television rights earning billions of dollars in revenues we have THE BIG SIX!
